700R4 no reverse

All of sudden there's no reverse? Sorry I haven't got back on this. I've been out of commision
for the last 2 weeks. The trans is in a 1987 short bed4wd pickup. I'll talk to a trans shop & give them all
the suggestions given. A shop had given me an estimate of $1200.00 to fix reverse. I'm debating about getting another trans from the junk yard. Any suggestions on this idea? Thanks

Re: 700R4 no reverse

Allways give year and engine and transmission and mileage and 2W or 4W.

Check fluid level and condition first.
Usually no reverse is internal problem.
If a 4W try shifting to low or high or 2W also

There is something broke inside and has to come out for a repair. The sunshell is known for breaking and one cause for no reverse.

your transmission needs to be rebuilt. upon examination of the internal componets other parts may be necessary replacement of torque convertor or professionally cleaned , as well as radiator , and the trans fluid lines going to it must be flushed......

Re: 700R4 no reverse

Sunshell generally takes out all gears. Most common cause of no reverse is the fiber clutch plates no longer have any fiber left on them. These are usually the first plates to go. Rebuild or replace trans.

Re: 700R4 no reverse

Not true, you will have forward gears and no 2nd or 3rd gear with no reverse.I have seen them with the sunshell broken with no other damage.I know another trick with the 700R4s,there are 5 black springs in one of the drums and there is one thing to do with them: THROW THEM AWAY! They restrict the clutches from floating, all you do is remove the snap ring and pull the top steel off seeing those black springs.Reinstall the steel plate and snap ring after doing this. You can see them real easy.Check for a plugged cooler too and this is one cause of this.If the cooler is pluged, replace the radatior or bypass it with a transmission cooler

Re: 700R4 no reverse

Those springs keep the clutches from dragging at higher RPMs.
Keeping the 3-4 springs allows you to stack more 3-4 clutches. You can safely run that pack as tight as 0.015" clearance if it's set up properly. Must use original pressure plates and snap ring.

Re: 700R4 no reverse

I have seen them burn up clutches and got this from a transmission shop I know.I do it all the time throwing them springs away with no problems afterwards when doing a repair or rebuild.

Re: 700R4 no reverse

I'm an advocate of the springs because I pack those clutches pretty damn tight.ha The springs are insurance that the clutches won't drag, even at higher RPMs. Just a preference. What clearance do you set the 3-4's at?? Which 3-4 clutch pack do you use...the stock pack(I think they're called Hi-Energy) or do you use an aftermarket pack?

Re: 700R4 no reverse

We don't use anything aftermarket and put it together without those springs.Found out the transmission shifts better without those springs.

Re: 700R4 no reverse

on a 700r4 reverse is the first to go when the bands are worn out.i have known alot of people who get by a little longer by parking where you don't have to back up . but eventually the forward bands will go too. if you get one from a junkyard they usually will only guanratee it with another one if it is bad so you might end up putting two or three in to get a good one.if you get it rebuilt then you ain't got to go through that hassle.

Re: 700R4 no reverse

3-4 clutch springs. They're located in the input drum. When you flip the drum upside down, to disassemble, the 3-4's would be the top pack. The springs are located between the pressure plates. They keep the clutches from dragging(burning up) while not in use.
