Weird metal vibrating sound?!?!?!?
I am having issues with my 02 SC (supercharged) Xterra it's got 70k miles now. I can here an weird noise it almost sounds like two metal pieces that are vibrating and touching each other. To give you a visual imagine holding a screw driver against your exhaust while you rev it. This is where it gets even weirder, it only happens between 2500-2800 R's. It does it in every gear but neutral or when the car isn't moving i.e. the clutch is in (haven't tried reverse). I checked for anything loose but didn't find anything. Before I had a sound kinda like this one and it was the heat sheild around the cat so I just remedied that problem. So any ideas on what could make that sound only at certain r's and in every gear while moving???

Most likely another heat shield somewhere.

Re: Weird metal vibrating sound?!?!?!?
I had that happen to me 3 months ago . It turns out it was the catalytic converter came apart internally. I would go to the dealer first before touching it yourself. Chances are the 8 year high mileage warranty on the emissions system covers that. If you fix it yourself or have someone look at it you may void the warranty . They swapped out my entire cat system , free of charge on the warranty . Good luck I hope this helps.
