Grand Prix Se 2000 Fuel Pump

I have problem starting my Grand Prix 2000, especially when mornings are cold. When the temperature is around 0 degrees it 's OK. When it's cold I have to pump the gas pedal to get it running , when it starts it's OK, no problem driving all OK. When I have problem starting it it looks like there is no gas, I heve to press the gas pedal 6,7,8 times then old it to the floor but it never smells gas ( like flooding ) Any suggestions and is the fuel pump accessible without taking the gas tank down.
Thanks Andre

Re: Grand Prix Se 2000 Fuel Pump

Welcome to AF.

Best thing to do is check fuel pressure for proper specs at the rear fuel rail on a 3.1L engine first before replacing the pump because it could be other things like a fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator.

Our Tips & Maintenance forum has a fuel pump replacement procedure. See link below. There is an access cover in the trunk so no need to drop the gas tank if the fuel pump is bad.

Re: Grand Prix Se 2000 Fuel Pump

I removed the cover for the fuel pump, the fuel pump is starting as I turn the ignition switch. I can ear the pump stopping after 3to 10 seconds I beleive the pump is OK. Any other suggestions ?

Just to be sure check the fuel pressure. There is a Schrader valve located at the the front fuel rail at the fuel pressure regulator on the 3800 engine. Look for around 48-55 psi. Use an automotive fuel pressure tester.

Re: Grand Prix Se 2000 Fuel Pump

Is there a check valve in this Fuel Pump ( Stop the fuel to go back ).
I noticed when the car has been off for 4-5 hours , it takes a bit of time to get started.
Thanks

Re: Grand Prix Se 2000 Fuel Pump

No check valve. The component that controls fuel back via the return line to the gas tank is the fuel pressure regulator. See pic below. When bad it will cause long starting. The fuel pressure check will check the FPR which is vacuum controlled when the engine is running.
