Re: neon....buy it or not??

The Neon is a great car for someone who is willing to do some of their own work. For someone who will be taking it to a repair shop for every problem, I would think a Toyota might be more reliable - though not nearly as much fun. You didnt say what year of Neon you were looking at. If you read from the past postings to this forum you will see the kinds of problems they have. We got a 97 that had about 110,000 miles on it. The timing belt had been replaced, and all we did was to run and run it. In a year it was leaking a lot of oil, dripping it onto the driveway. Neons (some years) were known for oil leaks, and thanks to this forum I learned all about them. I was able to tell ours had its original (feeble) head gasket replaced - so it wasnt that. It was a leaking rear main seal. I pulled the engine to fix this, and changed the other engine seals at the same time, and a couple of other things that were very easy to replace with the engine sitting on the workbench. It took a while because I dont try to work quickly. The parts werent expensive, and it went back together nicely. I did have to fix some melted wire damage where the wiring harness ran close to the exhaust manifold. Since then it gets about 1500 miles to a quart of oil, gives us over 30 mph on the highway(its an automatic tranny - the manual trannies do better), and we use it daily. Its past 150,000 now, and in daily use. I fixed the gauges that would go to sleep - that took about 20 minutes.
If I were going to buy another car now (used of course), I would read about the experiences other folks had with it first.
