Catalityc converter on explorer 96 XLT V6
My check engine is ON, and after getting a diagnostic, the diagnostic is code is PO420 (The PCM has determined that the catalyst system efficiency for bank 1 is below threshold for the current engine operating conditions. Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)
The main cause for this, a general mechanic said, one of the 4 catalizers needs to be replaced. (4 catalitic converters in this truck?, is that possible?) Obviously, being a general mech, he would recommend me to another mech shop.
Looking under the truck, I can see what it looks like 2 catalizer in serie, just before the muffler, not 4. Also, checking at autozone, they carry 2 types:
Universal Fit(around $80), and Direct Fit ($360, look as 2 universal fit converters, similar to the one on my truck)
One of Pep Boys guys reccomended me to consult with a well known mechanic to identify which catalizer is the one needed to be replaced, otherwise a dishonest mech might just put a cheap cat and charge me for the expensive one. Somebody commented me fixing this might cost me up to $1,000.
Now, so far I have managed to fix most problems with my cars myself, but this is over my head, so a real mech has to fix this. I only want to be sure, I will be charged the right amount, since I don't think this truck has 4 catalizers, and for what I've seen, there is not way to replace 1 out of 4, not even 1 out of 2. It looks as the whole catalitic assemble will have to be replaced (direct fit?).
