jackstand points??

ok, this may sound dumb but i usually just ride up on ramps when going under my car. Where do i let the car rest on jackstands?? Is it the same spot where i jack it up with the scissor jack?? (the metal rail on the edge of the car) or is there special place to let it rest?? I am just worried to get under the car until i know for sure it is secure. -thanks

Yes, that's exactly where it's supposed to go. There are 2 reinforced areas along that rail on each side of the car. One towards the front wheel, one towards the rear. The only problem I have is that when I want to put the car on jack-stands, I have to use the scissor-jack on the portion of the rail that isn't reinforced so that I can get the re-inforced part to come down on the jack-stand...

If you're still unsure where these re-inforced areas are, I think there's a diagram on the scissor-jack itself, or check your owners manual. But you can see them when you look under there...

yea, thats exactly what i did also. I used the scizzor jack on the part of the rail that wasnt reinforced so the jackstands would have room to fit on the reinforced part. I just wanted to be sure cuz if you were under the car and it fell that would probably be the end of you. I even searched the web for pictures of swaps in progress and looked where they put the jack stands. I still feel alot safer under ramps tho.

I've found that jacking a car on the non-reinforced strip will eventually crush it. Not nice (fortunately that was on my GL, not the SiR).

My suggestion: buy a hydraulic trolley jack - they are reasonably inexpensive. Make sure it's a tall one - first one I got didn't quite get the car high enough to get stands under. Put the jack under the front crossmember (NOT the sump etc) and then jack it up and put the stands under the reinforced areas.

I have a hydraulic and a set of ramps now - ramps are a drive on affair for oil changes, getting under the car etc with the minimum of fuss. Stands and hydraulic jack are for if the work requires the wheels to be removed. Just my thoughts.

Cheers

Here is a pic from the CRX manual for where to lift the car, so you can get it onto jackstands.

The Front Crossmember has a lifting point welded to it as Setanta said,
and for the rear, its the towing hook.
Then slide the jackstands under the jack points on the sides of the car and lower the car onto them.

Always make sure your jackstands are set at the same height, otherwise you can put unnessesary stress on the chassis.

And a Hydraulic trolley jack is definately money well spent!
