Re: honda civic 98 upgrade help

you could go with a throttlebody spacer, adjustable cam gears, bigger plug wires (like 10mm or something), you can get a header and a highflow cat off ebay for cheap, i cant really think of anything else for cheap...

All the things in bold, will not do anything for you. A throttle body spacer? These are not American muscle cars, they are 4 cylinder Japanese cars. All they will do (if anything) is add a couple ft lbs of torque at low rpm, and do absolutely nothing for the rest of your powerband. It would be a complete waste of $ to get one of those. Adjustable cam gears won't do anything for you on a stock engine, even with basic bolt-ons. You also can't just put on an adjustable cam gear, set it to a random degree, and expect it to make power. They are only useful when you have an aftermarket camshaft, and/or forced induction (turbo/supercharger). And in those cases, you would need to put the car on a dyno to tune it properly. Another waste of $. Spark plug wires don't do shit. They are meant for high horsepower vehicles. They do not net you any power, actually no basic bolt-on does, they free up power that is already available. Along with the rest of the ignition system, they ensure that there is a powerful spark when there is supposed to be spark. Yet another waste of $.

The other things mentioned, header and high flow cat ("test pipe"), are pretty much the only thing left that won't break the bank. After that, you'll need to spend more $ to either go the forced induction route or continue towards all motor (aggressive cam & higher compression pistons).
