Ball Joint removal and installation

I have a 1998 E350 and the drivers side ball joints are really squealing when you turn the tires. Looking in my Hanes manual it says I need a c frame type ball joint press. Looks like an oversize c-clamp. Looking online, this is a pricey tool. Is there any way of installing the ball joints with out one? Removal I'm not worried about, ruining the old joints, just don't want to ruin the new ones going in. Looking at it I would have to remove half the front axel to have them pressed out at a shop, trying not to do that if I don't have to.

Thanks guys,
Bob

Re: Ball Joint removal and installation

Auto Zone or Advanced has a tool loaner program. They assume you will buy their ball joints. I think Auto Zone sells TRW which I have used and was satisfied with. You can ask for MOOG but I'm unsure if they sell them. I've heard of some people beating them out with a hammer but this can cause damage this way so use a loaned tool. I have pressed them out with a hydraulic press but you have to remove the control arm.

Re: Ball Joint removal and installation

Replaced both upper and lower on the wifes 2000 E150 this past weekend. Borrowed the balljoint remover/installer from Autozone along with a pitman arm remover. Took right at 7 hours as I also replaced the brakes/rotors & bearings. Found an accurate write-up on it here: http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...line_Vans.html

Ford wanted $875 just for the ball joint replacement. Cost of parts including ceramic brakes, rotors, bearings, seals and ball joints for both sides were just under $300. Bought everything at Autozone except the ball joints, they came from Ebay at $44 for all 4 (2 upper, 2 lower).

I now have a kitchen pass for some needed fishing time!
