Xenon light problem 540i
Hi all
1st time here at the forum. Trying hard not to pay big $$$ to the BMW dealership! I've got a 1997 BMW 540i and my right xenon low beam light is out. I've tried swaping the bulb from the right to the left side and the bulb seemed to be good. I'm trying to locate the fuse that connects to the left light and having some problems locating it. I can't see the fuse at the light or in the trunk where the battery cannection. Question: 1) Is there a fuse for just the low beam light? If so, could this fuse been under the car? (I've got the BMW factory xenon ballast) 2) I had found 2 fuse box in the car: A) in the glove compartment and B) in the trunk. Is there other fuse box hidden in this car? Thanks for you help! |

Re: Xenon light problem 540i
In my 92 535i I have one in the engine bay right up against the driver side firewall. Could be one in yours as well.

Re: Xenon light problem 540i
Be very careful working on zenons. There is stored high voltage in the ballast that can cause serious injury- or worse.
I suggest you find an independant shop that works on BMW's, There's plenty out there. Here's a link to a similar zenon discussion on a Mazda board: http://forum.miata.net/vb/archive/in.../t-181914.html

Re: Xenon light problem 540i
Couldn't you just ground the light to dissipate the electric charge by putting an alligator clip on the negative lead and touching it to metal after removing the light from the car?
Hopefully not while standing in a big puddle of water, without rubber gloves on and rubber boots on? ![]() Or would that screw it up?

Re: Xenon light problem 540i
First off, I may be wrong but I didn't think BMW had xenons in 1992. But in anycase, I will assume that I am wrong. Although arks is correct about the high voltage and the system being dangerious. The main thing you need to remember is to not turn the system on when working on it. Xenons need high voltage to fire off the bulb, the once there on they take vary little voltage, but still do not removed with out the light off.
Now, if I was a gambling man, I would guess that the ignitor is bad. But I cannot remember what xenon are in a 92. Sorry |
