OEM Oil Filter

Well I bought an OEM oil filter today for my new 2003 4.8 silverado. I could not beleive how small it is. It looks like about the same size as my lawn mower filter. The parts guy said it's the same size as the 5.2 and the 6 liter.WOW! Should I use it or get a Wix or something else that holds a quart? Will the small one do as good a job?

Re: OEM Oil Filter

It will be fine. The older 5.7s that were 4wd had small filters too. I always say that if it is good enough for the manufacturer, it is good enough for me.

Re: OEM Oil Filter

There might be another A C Delco filter that is bigger(more capacity) that will work.About 15 years ago while working in a parts store we discovered in the back of the Fram sales catalog a breakdown of all the filters by dimension, thread size and whether it had a drainback valve or not. You could look up the original sized filter for your vehicle, and then go down the chart and find one with the same dimensions that was longer. I used to do it all the time back then with my filters, but can't remember the numbers I used. I believe there is such a reference still available today, and I'll check around and post back in a couple of days if I come across something.

Hi, I have a 5.3 with just under 150,000 mi., and it has had only the small filters used on it. I believe if you change your oil as you should you will not have to worry about the size of the filter. 2string also remember the mower probably has a larger filter in comparison to your truck because it is operated in dusty conditions that will always contaminate oil quickly.

That's a good reason for using the original filter for your truck. Over the years have encountered customers who desired a larger capacity for oil in their engine. My thoughts are that GM tries sometimes to get away with "whatever works minimally" and the engineers who design the parts probably take that into consideration, to save overall costs and improve the "bottom line". Increasing the capacity through using a larger filter, (in those applications where you can do so,) can have positive effects on lubrication, and more contaminate holding capabilities, all for the smaller cost of a filter 'upgrade'. Some larger filters don't even cost more than the original size. I've had some help from a guy who is fairly well known on my area for building racing engines as well as street applications. He always recommends to his customers to use a larger capacity filter where it is allowable instead of those remote oil filter relocation kits that use two separate filters, and extra oil lines to deliver the oil from the engine to those filters.
Yes, the original filters do a good job at filtering your oil, especially if changed on a regular basis, but if you could get better results using a larger filter for a few cents more, or even the same cost, wouldn't that also benefit your engine?

Re: OEM Oil Filter

If there is room for it, a larger filter would work (although it seems like the front driveshaft would prevent it in a 4x4). If I remember right, the stock filter (Hastings#) is LF232. An LF393 (maybe LF164, I havn't done an oil change in a while) has the same threads and O-ring and is about 2-3 inches longer. Anyway, whatever brand you use, I'm sure they make a larger filter. Try looking up one for a '92 Cadillac DeVille, I'm pretty sure they use the larger filter that would work on your truck.

I can't even remember how the filters mount (horizontal, vertical, angle), but it would be good if you fill the filter with oil (as much as you can) before you put it on the truck. Probably not as big of a deal on the newer trucks that are still flowing plenty, but on my old '86, the lifters will click for 30 seconds if i leave the filter empty (nearly 3x the capacity of the stock filter)

Re: OEM Oil Filter

I use the PL25288 PURE ONE BY PUROLATOR changed from Ac delco PF -59 when it was discontinued to the smaller size. I tried most of the oil filters and cut them open after use the purolator has the same filter media density as the ac but the drain back valve is better. wix 51522 is also a good filter this is same as the purolator pure one . purolator is easyier and cheaper to buy. Wix may have to call around to find store that carries this one. advanced autoparts carries the purolator good pricing. If you live in a hot climate or tow or go off roading dusty areas use larger filter for greater flow and cooling . In board boat engines always call for larger filters.

Re: OEM Oil Filter

Well greater flow and cooling in any condition sounds better to me so I guess bigger is better.

FWIW: Here's a link to a study done on engine oil filters...an interesting read :http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

Re: OEM Oil Filter

I have been using Frame and Propulator. I think I will continue to use Propulator or AC Delco.
