Movies

so let me bring you up to speed on what happened over the last 5 or so years in my town. first we had sowbiz video and videoflix. then there was some bullshit video store that came in and left. eventually we got rogers video (a big video chain in canada) in town (within the last 3 or 4 years) and the first one to feel the heat was videoflix (they closed within the first year that roger's was there). eventually showbiz had to close because the owner was having heart problems and couldn't handle the hours (they were doing fine). so now all we have is rogers.

now the problem with rogers is that they've got their entire wall space dedicated to new releases and recent releases. they've got a massive ammount of each movie. what they don't have is anything that came out before 2000. i came in looking for any of 5 movies: leaving las vegas, fubar, cocktail, the maltese falcon, and the hole (which is a lesser known movie). they had NONE of those.

so because the bigass movie giant came into my town i have to go looking through the entire ottawa region to find movies because my town doesn't have anything good anymore. i wish those fuckers never came because both of the other places had an excellent selection of old movies, new releases, recent movies, and everything between.

Re: Movies

Well, Ted Rogers has become very rich by giving what people want. Most renters want the new titles.

The older places kept the older flicks because they were cheap to obtain. This is good for you but they probably did not have the money to compete with Rogers Video directly.

Yeah, its an old story, the big box store, whether its walmart, Home Depot, McDonalds or Blockbuster arrive in a neighbourhood and drive the local competition out of business.

At least this big box store is Canadian...........................

Re: Movies

true, and i realize that the reason they've got those new titles is because most rentals are new releases (about 90% of the people i see are walking in the new releases, there might be one or two people walking through the "old", or one year old plus section) but it just sucks that the last place shut down. the small business was actually doing well, turning a profit and everything even with rogers in town but the owners couldn't run it anymore.

Re: Movies

Well if its any consolation, video rental chains are losing mone across the board for all the obvious reasons (bootlegs, on-demand, dvr, etc). So while the big chain took out yor local guys, they are probably not turning much profit, if any. I used to work for Movie Gallery (2nd largest US video rental chain) and they recently filed for bankruptcy. I imagine Blockbuster will be doing the same, although their relationship with Paramount may put them in a slightly better financial position than MoGal.

Also, if Rogers is anything like MoGal, then they likely had those older movies at one point, but once the title stops getting rented on a regular basis it gets tossed in the sale bin for $5 so they can make room on the shelves for The Grudge 3

Re: Movies

The Hole is a British movie, not lesser known, well, is but only here. Not a bad movie.

To the topic, um, deal with it? Just how it is man. Like trying to find an old anything. Just hard to now of days.
