Type F trans axle fluid for 2002 Winstar?

My Winstar popped a trans axle line today so now I must refill the tranny. It calls for Mercron V...can't get that at Canadian Tire...they only have ATF and the Type F. Can you use this Type F? Not sure where to get my hands on this Mercron V if not...

Re: Type F trans axle fluid for 2002 Winstar?

AutoZone carries Mobil 1 ATF.....which meets the Mercon V specification.
There are other brands as well.
I am REALLY suprised that your store only has Type F...as that is a really old, out of date specification.
My '96 calls for the Type F ATF for the power steering, but Mercon (now replaced by Mercon V) for the transmission.

Of course, if one is stranded.....then one must do what they have to do temporarily....but stick with Mercon V......and if you end up putting something else in, in a emergency, switch it out for the correct stuff ASAP.

I would call around and locate the Mercon V as it is pretty common by now.
It was hard to find a year ago.....but even Walmart should have it by now.

Re: Type F trans axle fluid for 2002 Winstar?

Hi, only use mercon V fluid. I also live in Canada and Canadian Tire does sell motomaster mercon/dexron III/mercon V that is the only fluid I have seen at Canadian tire saying mercon V on it but I chose not to use that product. Instead I went to Superstore or Real Canadian Superstore and they were selling ESSO Mercon V for $3.99 and I used this in my 1999 ford windstar and it worked fine. Walmart also has castrol import multi-vehcile fluid with mercon V rating and it also works fine in my 1999 windstar that calls for only mercon V fluid. Any ford dealer also sells mercon V. DO NOT PUT TYPE F IN IT. If you go to any auto store in the USA even walmart they carry mobil 1 mercon V fluid which is one of the better fluids to put in our windstars. Which part of Canada do you live in since I am in Vancouver.

Re: Type F trans axle fluid for 2002 Winstar?

I am in Oshawa, Ontario...I called Wal Mart on Sat and had the guy go on the floor and check if they had Mercron V...he came back saying no only something with Dextron 3 rating.

Now there is a strong possibility that he did not know what he was looking for, but I don't want to take a bus all the way to the closest Wal Mart just to find out that they really do not have any.

But hey if Esso has a product then maybe I can hoof it to the nearest service station, or hit up a Quick Lube joint for some...

The nearest Ford dealership has lots....at $7.33 a liter!!

is that how much Ford is really charging you? I too am in Canada (Muskoka ON) and went thru the same thing with Canadian tire. I went to my local ford and talked to the parts guy who sold me a case (12 litres) at $4.59 per. That was in the summer granted. Maybe they were giving you the 1 litre price or possibly the non-discounted price? As for the discount, any time I have to buy an OEM part from Ford I always ask for the discounted price. I think they must have a standard discount which is offered to other shops who buy Ford parts for cars they are working on. I've always got a discount when I ask for it.

I'd push 'em a bit.

If you have a Napa or CarQuest near by, check them out. That's where I got my Merc V ATF the last few times I needed it. It was Valvoline Maxlife, ATF in the red bottle. On the label it met Merc V specs. That's what I've had in my AX4N for about 2yrs now. In fact last summer I did another suckout and refill with maxlife ATF.
