rear window wiper

The rear window wiper, works when it wants to, presently it isn't working. I took it for twice while was under warranty and it worked for a little while, then it only worked when it wanted to. Is there anyone is having this problem? Has anyone had this problem solved? Please help!!!

Same problem!

I have a '99 expedition and I have that exact same problem. I'm wondering if the problem is with the wiper itself or the wiper switch.

Re: rear window wiper

When mine doesn't work. I go to the back of the vehicle and pull on the arm. Then it starts going and works for a while. I've only had to do this twice in three years though

Re: rear window wiper

I have the same problem on my '00. I think the problem involves the opening of the rear hatch or the rear window. Sometimes "fiddling" with the release will start the wiper working. Sometimes opening and closing the hatch or the window will start it working. Most of the time however, the only way to get it working involves standing in the pouring rain gently forcing the arm until it begins to operate... until the next rainstorm.

I thought it was a Poltergeist!

2000 EB Expedition does the same thing

Mine rear wiper only works in bad weather -- when it's a great day it sounds like it has a dead motor

Re: rear window wiper

I have the same problem. I took the wiper motor out and tryed to see if there was a place to oil the motor bearings or gear assembly. There wasn't any visible place to put any oil drops. I could make the wiper motor work if I tapped on it and that was it. No success. I plan on getting one from a local junk yard.

Re: rear window wiper

I have the same problem too. I actually learned to pull the wiper arm down from this site; but, I have to do it twice a week. I just got a wild hair up my R's and decided to remove the wiper from the motor mount and reset it about 1/4 inch lower. So far it works great and I'll keep you all posted. Hopefully it does the trick.

Re: rear window wiper

I think that was the trick! I used to have to tug at it every other day. Now, I have no problem what-so-ever. It makes me think that the arm drops too low and somehow throws the gear shaft out of alignment. Keep in mind that I am not a mechanic and I usually have a bolt or two left over when I take anything apart. I can work on people but not machines go figure!

Re: rear window wiper

I have a 2003 Expedition and I had the rear wiper stop working. I could tell that it was the wiper itself since when I open the window portion of the rear gate and tried to move the wiper it was very stiff. So I dismantled the wiper from the rear window. By removing the 'c' clip that holds the shaft of the wiper in the widow, I was able to remove the entire mechanism from the window. I used some 600 grit sand paper to smooth out any roughness from the shaft. I then applied some lithium grease to the shaft and re-assembled the wiper. All in all it only took me about a half hour to do and the wiper works well now. MT

Re: rear window wiper

You guys probably left the arm hanging off the arm rest for the wiper. I kow i did when i washed it once, that probably threw out of alignment and i have to tear it apart. I believe its fixable.
