HHHEEELLLPPP. Rebuilding front suspension...

Hello,
Has anyone ever replaced the upper ball joints in any olds/gm mid to late 60's car. You have to drill out the rivetted stock ones. The kit I bought has bolt on style but exactly how do I install? You must put the ball joint on the bottom of upper control arm first, but what about the extra piece that has the bolt pattern in it? It's very thin sheet metal. Does the rubber grease boot go inside it?
Any and all related info would be greatly appreciated
