Re: 96 Grand Am 3.1 runnin hot

yeah intake bolts can vibrate loose over time, which causes vacuum leaks which leads to issues on idle and performance.

On the sand, get a shop vac and vacuum it out!
If you blow it, it'll just go into more places it shouldnt.
If it doesnt all come out, you can use q-tips and petrolium jelly to pick it out of the hole(s).

Chiltons arent what they used to be, they used to have nice pics and great direction....
I havnt seen any new one's but it doesnt suprise me they're saving money.
The BEST would be a GM Tech manual for your year, check fleabay they are cheap for the older books.

No need to disconnect the power steering hoses, you can lay that to the side.
Motor mount doesnt need loosened or removed either.

ALso could you please down-size the pic(s), we like to limit them to 800x600.
Or you can just make'em a link the way they are. Thankx!

Re: 96 Grand Am 3.1 runnin hot

Was it this link ?http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=688030

Ok if your 3.1 is VIN J then this is how they go, if you have a manual for your year I'd go by that if the VIN is different.

with 3.1L or 3.4L V-6 Engine (VINs J, E - RPOs LG8, LA1)

This bulletin is being revised to change the model Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-06-01-O10A (Section 06 - Engine).

Condition:

Some owners may comment on an apparent oil or coolant leak. Additionally, the comments may range from spots on the driveway to having to add fluids.

Cause:

Intake manifold may be leaking allowing coolant, oil or both to leak from the engine.

Correction:

Install a new design intake manifold gasket. The material used in the gasket has been changed in order to improve the sealing qualities of the gasket. When replacing the gasket, the intake manifold bolts must also be replaced and torqued to a revised specification. The new bolts will come with a pre-applied threadlocker on them.

Notice

An oil leak may result if the vertical bolts are not tightened before the diagonal bolts.

Diagonal bolts may require a crows foot to tighten.

Tighten

1. Tighten the vertical lower intake manifold bolts (1) to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

2. Tighten the diagonal lower intake manifold bolts (2) to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

3. Tighten the vertical lower intake manifold bolts (1) to 13 N.m (115 lb in).

4. Tighten the diagonal lower intake manifold bolts (2) to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

Parts Information

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
Vertical is up and down, diagonal is sideways or at an angle.

If your book is for your year 3.1 , then the rocker and the valve cover(along with the rest) torque specs should be ok.

Just the lower intake bolt torq specs and sequence were changed a little in 2003.

I'll check on the specifics anyways for your 96', just to make sure.

Ok this link should have up to date info.
WOW this might help tooo.
