rear driving light help on 2000 Beetle

The left rear driving light is out on my 2000 Beetle and the stupid book I have says to jack up the rear end and take off the wheels and the whole rear bumper to get to this. A guy on Ebay that sells the replacement bulbs says they are easy to change out but didn't offer any help as far as telling me how to do it. Does anyone out there know if this can be easily done? Not only is the Vw dealer super high on repairs but the nearest one is 60 miles from me.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: rear driving light help on 2000 Beetle

Not sure what you're talking about - driving lights face forward not rearwards?
Do you mean tail/stop light or that red fog light at the bottom of the rear bumper (which is disabled in Australia). Regards

Re: rear driving light help on 2000 Beetle

hako,
Sorry but it might be called the left rear side light. It is on the bumper. Wasn't working when I bought the car. Also , the inside door lamp on the drivers side also does not work. I had the car at the VW dealer for some recall work on the brake lights and asked them to put a new bulb in the door light . They charged me 50 dollars and then said , Well it still doesn't work. I am wondering if it could be a fuse out and maybe the 2 are on the same circuit. Boy , the old Bugs sure were easier to deal with.
Thanks , BellaBlue

Re: rear driving light help on 2000 Beetle

I'd query the $50 charge for no fix as the time to replace the bulb would be a few minutes if that. They should have checked the fuse as well. The fuse panel is visible at the extreme end of the dashboard and is accessed by opening the drivers door (dunno what side of the road you drive on!).
Re the rear light - if you mean the red fog light I think its switched on by pulling the headlight switch (deleted on Australian cars) and if you mean the clear reversing light then it could be the inhibitor switch if not a fuse and finally if its one of the rear park lights (red) then they have a habit of making bad contact inside the holder.
What book told you to remove the back of the car??
