I would first check to see if you have power to the rear when switched. If yes, then i would guess you have a fuel delivery module malfunction.

Would a fuel delivery module malfunction cause the check engine light to come on??

The exact same thing happens in my '92 F-250, I was told it is the switch on the dashboard gone bad.

Re: 96 F150 dies when fuel tanks are switched

Is there a fuel pump per each tank? If so, maybe the pump in the other tank is dead, so when it switches over to that one, it just can't pump, thus dying.

Re: 96 F150 dies when fuel tanks are switched

First-You need a manual.Next you need to check for power to the [FDM] fuel delivery module[fuel pump-sender check valve and associated parts [FDM].Yes you have 2 [FDM] pumps. One in each tank.

Hi ya Mage218, did you ever pinpoint the problem? My 96 auto, straight 6 dual tanks, does the same thing.
THANKS!

Re: 96 F150 dies when fuel tanks are switched

That happened to me for one day a few weks ago. I would switch to the front tank, hear a hissing sound, and the truck would die.

Re: 96 F150 dies when fuel tanks are switched

Hi my 95 did the same thing. the gauge would switch, but the truck would die. I replaced the fuel pump, and all is well now. Had to remove the bed, but the job wasn't too hard. the toughest part was the bed bolts spinning, but I tack welded the heads, and it went great.
