high speed memory cards???

I've heard a lot of talk about "high speed" memory cards such as SD cards and the like. I know that the read and write speeds simply means how quickly the card can be read or written to. I'm wondering what an example of a "high speed" SD card would be..

Is this an example of a "high speed" card or are there faster cards? If so, is the difference really noticeable? I use the cards in my Canon S3IS digicam

8.8 MB/sec. read, 6.5 MB/sec write







On the same thread I'd like to ask if there are any compatibility issues with larger capacity SD cards in cameras these days.....Will a 1 or 2GB SD card be compatible in my canon? thanks

Yes. The canon S3 is compatible with only 2GB and lower. While Canon never officially made the annoucement, some people have reported using SDHC cards in theirs allowing for 4GB cards to be used, but don't count on it. Make sure the card is returnable if tried and do it right then.

As for speed, just go with Sandisk Ultra II's. They are plenty fast enough and with an S3, you're not really worried about speed from camer to card since you're not using the continuous shooting a lot and a for cards to computer it's just fine. I have 3 2GB Ultra II's and they are enough even for video which is a nice convenience. Costco I believe still has them for $20 each,s o if one of those is near you check it out.

I'll see if 2GB's ever go on sale again. Everywhere just had them for like $20 each.

thanks for the reply! Glad to hear that the 2GB will work. Reason I asked is because I had a 512MB card in there and after a handful of photos and about 5 minutes of video the card was full. Whereas in my old Kodak (5MP) camera, the 512 card was plenty large for video and photos. I didn't realize that there would be such a large difference between the two. thanks again

Shouldn't be that big of difference, but yeah, 2GB works fine.

I'd stick with the 2gb cards so that you can not have all of your pictures/videos from an outing or vacation all on one card in case something happens to it.

congrats on the S3...I had one and loved it. I sold it for the S5 for the hotshoe to use an external flash. The video quality out of these cameras is awesome.

BTW, don't waste money on high speed cards. I've always just bought the cheapest name brand Kingston or Sandisk standard SD cards and they handle everything these cameras can throw at them.
