security light on a 96 buick riviera
When I try to start my car every now and then the security light is on and my car will not start. I have to sit there for 3 minutes and then the light will turn off and the car will start. Any ideas on to what could be causing this or what I could do to fix it. Thanks.

The key reader in the steering column is not reading the resistor. Clean the resistor on the key with a pencil eraser, or you can use a Q-Tip with alcohol. Try another key if you have one!

Re: security light on a 96 buick riviera
It sounds like you have a Vehicles Anti-Theft System (VATS) intermittent failure.
Your key has a black chip on it. The problem is an antitheft sytem failure. Inside the lock cylinder are 2 contacts that read the key. Each time you turn the key you are bending the wire that goes to these contacts. After a few thousand starts, the wire begins to break and won't read the key every time. Once it fails, you're locked out for 3-4 minutes before you can try it again. If it has failed once, it will fail again. Contact a tech to either bypass the system or you will need to replace the lock cylinder & key. If you decide to bypass the system, you may be more successful talking to people that have installed remote starters. They do it all the time.
