anybody built a sub enclosure for 80's Caprice?

I want to build a box for 1 12" that fits in the upper deck area of the trunk off to the left side of my '87 Caprice. Anybody got any good pics of their trunk speaker set up? Maybe somebody's done this and has measurements?

Re: anybody built a sub enclosure for 80's Caprice?

Here's mine. I tried the whole upper deck thing with 10" subs to preserve trunk space, but it didn't really work out. The biggest subs that would fit on the upper deck and still have good sound quality would be 8" subs in my opinion. I tried a ton of different setups, different amps, speakers, enclosure types etc and kind of fell in love with this one. Area for the spare tire, two hinged doors to access the tail lights and store things like the jack, jumper cable, tools, fluids, etc. heavy cast aluminum speaker grilles instead of the plastic ones so I can still throw things like luggage into the trunk without it hurting anything. lol, You know you have a big trunk when you can fit two huge subwoofer enclosures formed to the trunk, two amps, a full size spare tire, jack, tire iron, jumper cables, a gallon of antifreeze, gallon of washer fluid, mini 12 volt air compressor, miscelanious tools & 3 quarts of oil and still have room for 3 suitcases and a duffelbag.

Damn I dont have a setup anything like that in my trunk. I just have a chained down single box holding a 12" diamond audio sub right infront of that real annoying hump in the middle of the trunk. I like the sound of the subs facing the back of the trunk better than them facing up (there is a difference).

Also I just have a wedged piece of wood in the back where I have my amp secured. it dont look pretty but it sounds good.

I'm thinkig of making a box that goes over the hump in the middle when I get my money to buy the old W7, just to class it up a lil more than my down home ghettofied trunk.

Pete, did you build that enclosure yourself? Or did you buy it?

Cause right now I am using the all stock Delcos, and over Thanksgiving I want to give myself an early birthday present(like 4 months early) and get a system installed.

Re: anybody built a sub enclosure for 80's Caprice?

I built it myself. It took a bunch of measuring and calculating to get them to fit right and to get the enclosures to the right frequency and the vents to flow just right. I've got it down to a science. It's actually two individual cutom fit enclosures put in, then bolted together. Then I trimmed in the remaining up by the spare tire and built the doors by the tail lights. Wired everything up, sank the subs and then carpeted it. True subs in generic or pre-made enclosures in these cars usually sound better facing towards the back, but when the sub and vent are placed in just the right areas and the enclosure is tuned to that specification it actually produces better and louder without distorting at all. I've never truly maxed out this system... halfway of pretty freaking loud.

Do you mind giving up those calculations? Or is it a highly reguarded secret? If so, I totally understand, Ill just have to crawl around during my Thanksgiving break lol.

It's no secret... I'll just have to search around my computer. I designed the final thing using a CAD program. Once I find it I'll turn it into a jpeg and post it.

I'm sorry, but I'm not having any luck finding those enclosure dimensions. If I stumble across them in the future I'll message them to you through AF.
