Replacing ring and pinion and carrier 1978 Monte

Yes I have a 78 monte I have replaced the engine with a 400 sbc.It ripped the rear right out and destroyed it.It is a 7.5 Rear with a 273 gear.I got a rear out of a s-10.The s-10 rear is a 7,5 with a 342 ring and pinion.I tried to swap the carriers and the pinion is hitting the carrier.Shouldnt this work without hitting all I am doing is putting the carrier and gears in a different housing both are 7.5s.This gear was working perfectly on this carrier,Just in another housing both the same size.
PLEASE HELP
