Thought I would let everyone know, it quit again a month after the last post. I finally found the "Ground Strip" under the carpet between the drivers seat and the door sill. Someone before me had replaced the heavy gauge common ground to the floorboard and ran it to the dash frame. A good idea to a point. They only shoved the bare wire back into the ground strip, no connector. It was corroded. Cut all the ground wires into the strip and soldered them together and shrink tubed them. It has had no problems since!
This ground strip is the ONLY place the VATS, lights and electric door controls have a common connection. It doesn't even show up in my wiring diagrams for it. It happens to be right in a place where you would hit the ground strip with a foot getting in and out, causing the intermitent problem. Hope this helps out someone else sometime..
