98 Montana power window problem
Hello,
I have a 98 Montana the passenger side electric window will go down but not up using either passenger or driver side switches. I had to take door apart to dissengage the motor to put the window back up. With the motor dissengaged the motor still only will spin one way. Could this be the motor, or the switch, if possibly the switch is there a way to jump the motor and test it? Thanks, need some advice as its too cold to ride around with the window down !! |

Re: 98 Montana power window problem
Ground return from both sides of motor run through driver switch. Driver switch is a problem in lot of cases. Diagrams here
www.avigex.ca/xport/pwrwindows.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/pwrwindows97.jpg (pwrwin97 is in fact same circuit but just drawn differently). If motor runs one direction, no reason it does not in the opposite: same contacts, just reversed polarity. Problem is with feed.

Re: 98 Montana power window problem
I have the same problem with my 2000 Montana. Passenger window will go down, but not up. But only the passenger button works. Drivers button does nothing. I changed the polarity on the wires to the motor, and the window went up. (It was supposed to rain) So am I to assume that the drivers side power window button for the passenger side is dead?

Sounds like a sunny Saturday project to me! Don't know your level of experience following wiring diagrams, but you should be able to insert a series of 'jumpers' to by-pass the driver's side switch (effectively isolating and removing it from the circuit) and then see if the passenger side switch works OK. If it does, then there is a contact in the driver's side switch either not feeding power or not referencing ground. Be careful and methodical though with the jumpers as you are playing with 12 volts and a lot of really skinny wiring, so a short can create a very unlucky day, unless it blows a fuse first. By eliminating the jumpers one at a time, you should be able to figure out which side of the switch is acting up. Assuming that you isolated the switch successfully, the jumper thing should work. If it didn't, it points to something after or between both switches. You will probably need to trace all of the relevant wires that go to the windows on both sides to see if you have an 'open', (corroded wire or broken connector). Pay close attention to the wiring running in the channels (tops of the rocker panels covered by the plastic step plate) for water damage on either side of the van. Please let the board know what you decide to do and what you found. Good luck. |

Re: 98 Montana power window problem
Hi Paul. it sounds like the problem i had with my 02. the drivers window went down but not back up. the problem was in the contacts of the driver switch. i removed the switch and used 2 jump wires to put the window up. the with the switch in hand put on 2 test leads to the meter (on the diode test to hear the continuity beep when the contacts close) with the test leads on the up side of the switch contacts i used compresed air to blow in the switch area from above and below and tapping the switch case with a screwdriver and moving the problem switch on and off a few times the meter was beeping indicating the switch was now working. reinstalled and it has work flawless. it would seam to me that a small piece of grit had fallen onto the switch area and down into the switch contact area causing the contact to not close. it worked for me. i could not get the switch a part with out braking it so this was an option to an expensive replacement. my 2 cents good luck 463

Re: 98 Montana power window problem
OK. Problemo solved...
I luckily have a friend at the local wrecking yard. I went there and found a 2001 Montana with the power windows controls still in it. So I yanked them both out, and pluged them into my van.. Drivers side had no effect, but alas I replaced the passenger side button, and all is well. The wife is happy again.. Thanks for your help and replies, this has now free'd up my Saturday for the rest of the "Hunny-Do List". Paul |
