'96 3.1L Grand Am - won't accelerate/speedometer doesn't work

My nephew just got this car - has a newer 3.1L engine in it - I think from a '99 Malibu. Have had trouble initially with the ETS light (traction control, I think??). When that light (ETS OFF on lower left hand side of the instrument cluster) was on the car wouldn't shift into overdrive - turned the light off and the car ran better - for a while.

Presently, the computer has thrown a PO306 code (cyl 6 misfire) and the speedometer does not work and the car runs like crap. It just won't accelerate - at the high end of each gear the engine lurches and it will not even shift into overdrive. Transmission does shift thru the other gears, but does not accelerate evenly at all.

Also had previously set codes PO300 and PO756 (Shift Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off) and I could not clear the ETS OFF light by pressing the button on the gear stick. I cleared those codes and was then able to turn the ETS light off, drove the car for a while and computer then set the PO306 code only- running poorly, not accelerating, etc.

Can anyone provide any guidance? I appreciate the help.

Re: '96 3.1L Grand Am - won't accelerate/speedometer doesn't work

Welcome to AF.

Sounds like the trany has a problem,
which could be because a chevy engine and trans was installed.

I would say now the PCM is confused and doesnt know how to operate, probly due to wires not being the same on the pinouts of the harness plug ins.

I am not certain what the differances are between the two models, malibu vs grand am but I'm sure they are very different.

Misfires are normal with GMs.

As far as I can tell the engines are the same (VIN M) etc. I know there are still some issues...

Is this fixable? Any suggestions?

If just the engine was swaped and the VIN is the same then thier should not be any issues with that.

Was the PO756 the only code, including history ??
Since that code is Shift Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off, then OD wouldnt work.

So I would start looking at the wiring and plug ins at the trans first.

If thats been done and checked out OK,
then I'd get it to a trans shop to diagnose what is exactly wrong with the trany.

The trans will most likly have to come out to fix that shift Solenoid is if it bad.

Good Luck!
