99 GTP - Loud Fuel Pump?

Hi All,
I just got a 99 GTP about a month or so ago and ever since i've had it, it as made a loud humming (buzzing) noise in the rear end. I thought maybe it was the fuel pump, so I just turned on the accessory to power the car but not to start it, and the loud noise comes on for about 3 seconds and shuts off. The car runs great, it is just an obvious noise when standing outside of it. Could this be something common with Grand Prix's? Should I be worried the fuel pump is going out? Lastly, could this have something to do with inexpensive resistor and maybe it needs replaced?

Thank you in advance, I would just hate to be stranded someday without a fuel pump because I work out of town.

Thanks again.

Re: 99 GTP - Loud Fuel Pump?

When you take ignition to run not start it is normal to hear the fuel pump. It will prime for a couple of seconds.

When the car starts up and dies after about 10 seconds or so then you may have a bad fuel pump resistor. Run a fuel pressure check at the FI rail just to confirm your pump and fuel pressure is up to specs. Also, keep up with maintenance such as fuel filter. Good luck with it.

Re: 99 GTP - Loud Fuel Pump?

BNaylor, thanks for the quick response. Sorry, I knew the part with the fuel pump priming, that was my method of figuring out if that was the fuel pump making the loud noise. The car runs great, havent ran into any fuel issues yet (knock on wood). I only wanted to ask this because when the car is idling, if you walk to the back, you can hear the buzzing noise fairly loud. It just made me worry that its running too hard or something.

Do you think there would be different signs before the fuel pump would completely fail?

Thanks again.

Re: 99 GTP - Loud Fuel Pump?

Depending on the age of the car and fuel pump you may hear the fuel pump (minor noise) while the engine is running but it should not be that noisy. Any sound should not be louder than the engine running noise or exhaust which has a tendency to muffle any fuel pump noise, therefore I would keep an eye on it. However, I had a noisy fuel pump one in one of my GM cars for 4 years and it lasted until I traded it in.

Re: 99 GTP - Loud Fuel Pump?

Ok, so i do think the pump may be on its way out. If I read correctly, the pump is accessible from the trunk? Now that I think about it, sometimes on the interstate, it tends to hesitate a tad when I baby the gas pedal. When I get on it just a little bit, it is fine.

Thanks a lot Bnaylor.

Re: 99 GTP - Loud Fuel Pump?

Ok, here goes the most important thing right now on my car that needs to be fixed is the fan so that the engine doesn't over heat. The transmission is leaking and I am fearful that it to is also getting hot causing the car to idle rough and postpone acceleration. I also think that maybe the things that the car is doing could be the cause of the fuel filter or pump or something. Its doing a jerky type of thing. So if someone might know what the problem might be please let me know.
Thanks
