1996 Mercury Mystique Engine Replacement
I have a 1996 Mercury Mystique 2.5 24 valve Duratec with a broken cam and bad head. I feel it would be just as easy to replace the whole engine. Can someone tell me what years, makes, and models I can find this same engine?
![]() Also, do you think it would be better just to change the head? I would have to drop the engine and transaxle if I wanted to do this, right? Last question, does anyone have a 2.5 24 valve Duratec engine for sale? I am in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Thanks in advance! |

Re: 1996 Mercury Mystique Engine Replacement
95-00 Contours/Mystiques used the 2.5L engine.
You may just want to swap a 3.0L. Its basically a direct swap. You could just change the head without swapping pulling the motor, but your going to have a fun time trying to retime the motor with the small amount of room with the timing cover. There could be damage to the pistons as well as this isnt a non-interference engine. Did you actually pull the valve cover and see that you have a broken cam? You would be the first person that I know of thats had this happen. If your looking for engines for sale check out the contour.org classifieds.
