'96 escort 1.9 auto trans. Torque converter locked ?
On my escort when i put in drive it instantly stalles when reve up and put in gear will move a bit but not very good if jack up and hang front in air wheeels spin fine and not stal when put in gear ones say torque converter is locked and unplug wires i unplugged wires on front of transmission but no change so i like know more what could be wrong.

It sounds like your engine just isn't handling load. It might stall in neutral if you just turn the AC on.
Check to make sure that are 4 cylinders are getting spark.... maybe do a compression check too. I bet your engine is not running on all 4 or is not at full power for one reason or another. |

Idle speed could be incorrect. Check IAC valve. Fuel filter could be clogged. Spark plug wires could be bad. You could have a vacuum leak on the intake manifold.

yea i would check basics like plugs, wires, compression alot of times bad wires can seem like a bad converter

Mine is a 92. Do the 96's still have the big rubber air inlet duct running from the air-filter/mass-air-flow-sensor up to the throttle body? If there is any crack in that rubber duct, it will really mess up the air-fuel mixture, and result in feeble engine power at low rpm.
