BMW is generally the most reliable of the German makes.

Haha, those are in two different classes you do know that right? The E420 would have to be against a 5 series BMW but I'd say go with the Benz, the 740 spends to much gas and it's to big and ugly for my taste, I like the new body, but the E class hasn't changed till' 04 and the old ones look a lot nicer from the front anyways, like a Plane
 , my mom has an 01' E320.
