Father of All Bombs?

Well, it looks like the Russians are doing their homework and looking for some attention.

Quote:

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has tested the world's most powerful vacuum bomb, which unleashes a destructive shockwave with the power of a nuclear blast, the military said on Tuesday, dubbing it the "father of all bombs."

The bomb is the latest in a series of new Russian weapons and policy moves as President Vladimir Putin tries to reassert Moscow's role on the international stage.

"Test results of the new airborne weapon have shown that its efficiency and power is commensurate with a nuclear weapon," Alexander Rukshin, Russian deputy armed forces chief of staff, told Russia's state ORT First Channel television.

The report said the new bomb was much stronger than the U.S.-built Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb -- MOAB, also known under its name "Mother of All Bombs." "So, Russian designers called the new weapon 'Father of All Bombs'," it said.

Re: Father of All Bombs?

I love hearing about new technologies, and military technologies are usually the coolest, but it worries me that we (as in humanity) are still concerned with making the biggest, most powerful bomb possible.

Re: Father of All Bombs?

IMO the bomb is impressive because unlike a nuke it doesn't have the after effects of radiation but like the U.S.'s MOAB I don't think it will be effective against terrorism or any insurgency.

Plus the way it has to be delivered with an old fixed wing bomber opens it up to any country's air defenses. Unless they plan on using it on their own people.

Re: Father of All Bombs?

You'd think they could come up with a fancier name then spoofing the US version.

Re: Father of All Bombs?

I heard about this last week, though I havnt seen any film footage

Maybe we, the U.S., would have the money to invent some new technologies if we werent pissing it all away..... :

Then what would we call the next "big" bomb ?
Grand-Dad !?!

It's like the countries are competing with each other and that's not always a good thing.

Probably "Super Fat Man" or "Super Fat Woman" as far the U.S. is concerned. The U.S. obesity problems justifies it. Just ask Jay Leno. Or did they use that one back in WWII on one of the old A-bombs?

Yeah, but anyone showing the ability to defend themselves causes fear in the US and the desire to disarm them.

Re: Father of All Bombs?

I serious doubt anything the U.S. says or does will ever disarm Russia. Remember the Cold War. They did a good job of defending themselves. Of course, there was M.A.D. to consider. All we did was out spend them bringing an end to the so called Cold War which IMO is just dormant. Putin is going to do what he wants.

Man, I love that youtube Dr. Strangelove video.

Yeah, that was a gas.

Speaking of "Dr. Stranglove" did they ever colorize it? I see the newer DVD releases but in B/W. Good addition to the collection. It is a classic.
