2000 5.3L z71 whining noise

I have a 2000 silverado 5.3 with 140k on engine and 60k on tranny. Engine whines upon acceleration. I thought this might be a tranny problem but I also hear the noise when the truck in in park or neutral. Anytime I increase the acceleration I hear the whining noise. The more acceleration, the louder and higher the pitch becomes. Any ideas where to start?

Thanks.

Lots of possibilities here, for starters take off the serp. belt, see if the noise goes away, if so look for a noisey alternator, idler or tensioner pulley bearing.

Re: 2000 5.3L z71 whining noise

The sound definately appears to be coming from the area of the serpentine belt. I could not isolate it but it was near the alt.

Any suggestions on what the most common malfunction would be?

Also, is the noise in the belt and tension or is it possible that the alt could actually be making that noise?

Re: 2000 5.3L z71 whining noise

hey. i was just about to ask the same question on my truck. i got about 90k miles and this past week, its done it 3 times, but not consistenly... it sounds like its coming from the transmission as well, but i can't figure out the problem. it whines one acceleration, and usually after 1st or 2nd gear it goes away... any ideas?

Ha Ha Ha good one, blinker fluid I'll have to remember that one. It could be the bearing in the altenator for the pulley. As to going away after shifting from second could definitely be from the tranny.

Check your belt.. you may need a new belt tensioner
