'96 bird 3.8l random misfire problem

I hope Some one can shed light on this problem.
My 96 3.8l bird has had random misfire issues. I chased it around like everyone else in this forum. I replaced coil paks and plugs and wires.
It went away for a little while and then came back. Codes were showing random misfire on #6 cyl. I got annoyed and spent $80 on High Temp 8mm wires. Problem solved for 2 1/2 years. This week it started throwing a random misfire on #6 again. I pulled the wire and it was definitly burned in 2 spots. I replaced it with an old left over wire from previous endevors and cleareed the codes. Viola! It ran just fine. Only for a day and then threw the same random misfire on #6 . I replaced the #6 wire with a new high temp wire and cleared the code before starting. I now DO NOT have CEL on but it does show a General Random misfire P0300 with scanner and it runs as rough as it did when CEL was on. Could the coil pak for 3/6 cyl become damaged from the random firing? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the plugs and check the wires again, it sounds like your problem is in there... the coil shouldn't be affected my misfires since it sends the same spark if there is a fire or not.

hmmm maybe its a internal problem??? maybe something is wrong with his cylinder?? i dunno, im tired and at work..i may be going off the cliff on that one. but if he's checked the plugs and wires more than once then maybe its something else..hey are u gapping or not gapping your plug correctly??

Re: '96 bird 3.8l random misfire problem

Heres an update guys.
As I said before, I cleared the DTC with my scanner and started the engine.
I ran like crap but did not turn on the MIL. I hooked the scanner up and it showed P0300 Misfire pending. All the other plug wires looked just fine.
I had a complete set of working coil paks and module out of another bird that was totalled. I replaced the 3/6 pak on which there always seems to be a problem with the #6 wire burning up and low and behold, its idling and accelerating fine again. I checked resistance on the primary and secondary on the bad pak and it showed to be ok but it might just behave differently under load. What I think may have happened was: with the #6 wire burning up and shorting on exhaust, it may have degraded the windings in the pak. This last time it happened my wife was 1/2 hour away from home while it was sputtering. That prolonged abuse may have fried the coil. Just my thoughts.
Hope this helps and if anyone has anything to add I'm all ears cause I'm just guessing here.

Re: '96 bird 3.8l random misfire problem

I have your car and went through the same BS it turned out to be the fuel pump (just what you didn't want to hear). When I took it out it turned out to be the WRONG fuel pump! It was the straight from the assembly line, but it was one from the 95 3.4L and it had crapped out on me. Try replacing the fuel pump relay first (which you need to remove some interior panels to get at) b/c sometimes that is what's wrong
