Question Car Dies When Hvac Control In Off Only

PLZ HELP..
89 3.1 210,000K THE HEAT WORKS GOOD AND THE CAR RUNS PRETTY DECENT BUT WHEN THE HEAT OR AIR IS ON THE OFF POSITION THE CAR DOSENT WANT TO IDLE AND DIES WHEN COMING TO A STOP SIGN?????????
IT DOES NEED NEW EXHAUST AS ITS GETTING LOUD AND SMELLS LIKE A SNOWMOBILE..ASUMING A NEW CADDY WILL FIX THAT.

ALSO HOW HARD IS IT TO REPPLACE THE GAUGES AS THEY ONLY WORK SOMETIMES..SPEEDOMETRER ALWAYS WORKS.

Welcome to AF.

IT sounds like you have a vacuum leak in one of the HVAC actuators or the line running to the HVAC. As long as it's on, and drawing some vacuum, the engine runs ok, but as soon as the vacuum draw is stopped, the car is sucking air from the faulty component and throwing off the air/fuel mixture.

The 88-93 Grand PRix's had a lot of cluster issues, so the guages acting up is not unusual, especially as mileage increases.
