Transmission

I have a 1995 G20 Infiniti. When I come to a complete stop and proceed to go, the car thrusts. I called my mechanic and he said it sounded like the transmission. It is now 1 month that I don't have my car and my mechanic can't seem to locate the problem. I'm at wits end, because, I don't think I can really afford to bring to the dealership. What do I do. I am a female and I really don't know anything about cars. My brother recommended this site to me and I did find something that seems just like my problem and the solution was the EGR Valve. Any other ideas. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Can you expand/explain "the car thrusts" a little more?
How many miles has the car done??

Thanks for the reply, I have 67,000 miles on the car and whenever I make a full stop, the cars gives a hard kick when I go into first gear. I am okay if I coast, but once I make that full stop, it does it again. I have an automatic. Hope you can advise. Thank you again

First thing I'd do is check the transmission fluid. The auto box probably has a hydraulic clutch (can anyone confirm this?), in which case it may well be low fluid.

Second thing I'd do is check your "kickback switch". Again, I don't know the system on your car, but most auto's have a switch on the accelerator so when you floor it, it tells the gearbox to change down. Make sure this is still working. (simple test is when driving - put your foot down and it should change down a gear, pull your foot up and it should change up. Drive at a constant rev and it shouldn't change at all).

If these two don't come up with anything, then I'm afraid it's an autobox problem. Sounds very much like a hydraulic problem, so you may get away with a simple replacement seal, rather than a new gearbox. Find a good local gearbox specialist - since most garages send gearboxes away to specialists (but add their margin in on top).

The cause of a number of tranny problems in these cars is that the fluid filter in the oil pan gets blocked up with clutch material. Hard shifting from a stop as you describe can certainly be caused by this. Others have experienced similar problems going from neutral to reverse and neutral to first gear.

DeeDeeG20, I suggest you print out this webpage: http://www.se-r.net/transaxle_clutch/auto_lsd_info.html and give it to your mechanic. Tell him to read the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs he'll know what to do.
