Question 1986 VW Jetta GL 5 speed, Starts then Stalls

I hope this is the correct forum to post in. I am new to the boards.

I have an 1986 Jetta GL (Gas) Manual 5 speed, that will start then after about 30 secs stalls.
Also if you start the engine then hit the gas peddle it will stall.

I have done the following:

- Replaced Spark Plugs
- Replaced Battery
- Checked Air Filter
- Checked Oil
- Checked distributor cap (needle looks new)
- Checked vacuum lines
- Checked battery cables
- Checked fuses
- Checked Clutch peddle to see if it is engaging

Now if I try to start the car a couple of times I can smell fuel, then its flooded. So doesn't that mean its getting gas? Also the car has been sitting for 2 years outdoors. What else do I need to check. The Coil? Could it be the starter even though it starts then stalls?

Any help would be appreciated
thanks
D

I have hooked up a old spark plug to wire and had my GF crank the engine. I got a nice jolt/Spark

So I have a spark, and it is getting fuel, I think the throttle might be a problem but im not sure.

check your fuel filter for debris and build-up. also, check your fuel pressure.

anyone know or have a diagram of where the fuel filter is? I've read that it might be in the gas tank, is this true? Or is the fuel pump is in the tank?

Here are some pictures under the hood.

First off the Ingnition Coil has a wire that looks disconnected but if you connect it, the car will not turn over.

Here is a video of me trying to start the car, then it stalls

You have two fuel pumps. one in the tank and one along the frame-rail by the rear passenger tire. the main filter is along the frame-rail. the pump in the tank has a screen that can pick up gunk and clog. the good thing is, that you can access the pump from the trunk. no tank removal required, so it is an easy thing to check.

Try using starting spray to see if it will make it run for a bit. My guess is that the pump under the car is gummed up. The fuel supply pump (the one in the gas tank) can often supply enough gas to start it, but not for it to run. Gas goes bad and after two years there is no doubt it's bad. Siphon the gas out and put in fresh gas along with some fuel injector cleaner. Normally I'd recommend sea foam, but in this case you want to use something with a lot of toluene (Usually the cheaper stuff).

Does the jetta have a EGR valve? If this is opened while starting would this cause a problem?

also does this car have an
MAF or MAP?

Thanks for the replys guys,

I have removed the fuel pump thats in the tank, and examined it. It looks new the screen looks new nice clear and white. But I did find the rubber gasket for the fuel pump in the tank by luck. I was putting back the fuel pump and then pulled it out to re-position it and I see this rubber black thing get cought on the fuel pump. I took it out and there it was the rubber gasket. Now I tried starting the car again but it still only starts then stals only this time I can hit the gas peddle and it revs up but then dies unlike before it would just cut out when you hit the gas peddle.

Disconnect the hose on the outlet of the pump in your trunk. Hook up some type of extension (larger hose) and run it into an empty gas can. Disconnect your passive restraint belt so that it won't turn over. Turn on the key and listen for the gas going into the gas can. It should pump something like 2 gal / min. I forget exactly. If this works, reconnect the hose and check out the pump under the car. You may also need to vent the lines to your fuel injectors. Loosen the hose slightly at the injector then turn the engine over until you see a bit of fuel leak out. Do this for each injector. Wear safety glasses! Also, you should check your timing. I think your model uses mechanical timing to control your fuel injection.

How can I adjust the timing if the car doesnt stay on longer than 30 secs? I have checked the fuel pump in the tank and the screen. Found rubber gasket inside fuel tank. It was for the fuel pump. It still does not stay started. Injecters are shooting gas.

You need to look at the timing marks.

Re: 1986 VW Jetta GL 5 speed, Starts then Stalls

the fuel pump and filter are fine. But I think the problem might be the air/fuel mixter or the fuel distributer.

The car starts, I can hit the gas once then it stalls. The car starts then starts to stall then it tried to ctach it self then stalls.

Any ideas?
