99 GTP - Purchased at 101k - Any Immediate Maintenance?

Hi Everyone,
I just purchased a 99 GTP with 101k. It runs great, I would just like to chime in with the Grand Prix crowd and see if anyone can recommend any immediate maintenance? I do plan on putting new spark plugs and wires, possibly thermostat, basic tune-up stuff. Is there anything GTP specific I may want to take a look at as well? I did see somewhere that I should use the "cold" spark plugs.

Thank you in advance for you advice.

colder spark plugs are only necessary if you're modded and running higher boost. Stick with AC-Delco plugs and wires unless you are modded. The autolites are the favorite of modders due to the easy numbering system as to heat ranges and they're inexpensive. Going to a 180 degree stat (down from the stock 195 degree) is a good idea on GTP's, helps reduce KR.

Thanks for the response, I will just stick with OEM plugs and wires. I will replace the fuel filter and PCV valve as well. Anybody got any other ideas of things that maybe should be checked for around 101k? Thinking timing belt maybe?

Thanks again.

Ahh Buddy, good decision on the GTP, but take another look at your motor. The 3800 has a maintanance free timing chain, no belt to worry about here. Also might i suggect a fuel and air filter replacement if you havnt done so already.

Very glad to hear that about the timing, I am currently going through a timing issue with my 4cyl Ranger. I will certainly change out the filters as well.

Thanks for all the advice.

You may also want to pick up a bottle of supercharger oil from your local GM dealer and top it off.

Good point Jeep. I'm assuming you are recommending that the OP drain and replace the old supercharger oil since last maintenance status is most likely unknown.

Couple things to think about:
-Transmission oil change AND FILTER
-Coolant Flush
-Injector Cleaning

Doing those first two are pretty much mandatory. A lot of people neglect the trans oil and filter, take care of it and it will take care of you.

yes sir, that is correct. The OP can find out how to do this by looking in the 'tips and maintenance' under 'supercharger snout removal coupler replacement'.

I just got me a squirt bottle and stuck the tube into the supercharger and squirted the stinky oil into the bottle until nothing else comes out. You have to keep moving the tubbe around in there to get it all out. You should be able to get most of the 2 bottles in to it when finished. Only fill S/C oil up to the bottom of the threads and no more.

Have fun and take a big old whiff of that oil and get it out the way. That way you get no big surprise...

Re: 99 GTP - Purchased at 101k - Any Immediate Maintenance?

Thanks to everyone for the responses, this is exactly what i was looking for. I plan on have the following maintenance done:
OEM Plugs and Wires
Thermostat
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
PCV Valve
Supercharger oil changed
Transmission Fluid and Filter changed (lower priority, but planned)
Coolant Flushed
Injector Cleaning

I can do most of this myself, although I think I will have a GM mechanic perform the maintenance if the labor costs isnt too crazy.

These are the plans until she's payed off, then I get to the fun stuff .

Thanks again to everybody.

Re: 99 GTP - Purchased at 101k - Any Immediate Maintenance?

Just so you are informed of all options you'll find many GTP and GT owners do not necessarily follow the typical advice given to stay with AC Delco spark plugs. Of course, it depends on your engine whether stock or modded and how much you are willing to spend. But many of us on the forum save money by doing preventive and/or scheduled maintenance DIY, however, that is up to you.

Your stock plugs unless already replaced by the previous owner(s) will either be the AC Delco 41-921 double platinums or the NGK Laser Platinum PTR4B-15. These are hard to come by and may no longer be produced but may be available in the supply chain. GM now recommends the AC Delco 41-101 Iridiums which is warrantied for 100K miles plus. However take note that this specific spark plug is made by NGK. As an alternative and now becoming the replacement plug of choice for stock GTPs to include GTs at least in my area is the NGK TR55IX which is an Iridium and very similar if not identical to the AC Delco 41-101. I got a good deal on the TR55IX for a friend with an '00 GTP and we just got done replacing them. About one hour total time DIY. Plugs were $6.99 each with a $5.00 pickup discount at Checker/Kragen/Schucks Auto Stores. Grand total $39.94 including state sales tax.

Also, if you DIY spark plugs be sure to use anti-seize compound on the plug threads and dielectric silicone grease on the spark plug boots. Easy to remove and take off the next time around especially on the rear bank.

Further, as Rich pointed out stay with the AC Delco Premium Silicone 7mm ignition wires because they are due for replacement at 100K miles. Best around and hard to beat.

Thanks, I appreciate the comments on the spark plugs. I feel it is always good to do preventative maintenance, and will be performing the tasks above asap.
