Door speaker removal.

I have a 93 Lesabre Limited and would like to replace the door speakers as the fatory units are no longer working. Fututeshop and Bestbuy told i needed to buy 4x6 speakers for replacement. They were wrong after breaking some of the clips trying to access the driver side door speaker i discovered they were 5.25.

now when i get to the passenger side i'd like to not break the clips on that side. does the entire door panel have to be removed to do this correctly?

after searching the forums here i discovered that i may have some tweeters in the dash as well. i will verify this tomorrow. what size would they be if i have them?

some suggestions would be appreciated

The door panels must be removed to gain access to the door speakers. You are right, they are 5.25s, and the speaker housings in the doors should be holding the tweeters, as well (you'll see that the tweeter faces the small speaker grille on the side of the door panel armrest) Concert sound II systems did not come with any speakers in the dash, only the 4 speaker system did (this was the entry level sound system) The dash speakers are
4x6, this is probably where the stores got mixed up in giving you the sizes.

Ok, door panels come off. i found a thread on here with step by step instructions on this procedure.

I'm a bit confused here, are you saying that there are tweeters in the door as well? the 5.25's look like a midrange driver w/o tweeter. or are you suggesting the dash may hold a set of 4x6's as well. In any case, once i remove the door panel i will have a better idea of what you are saying.

could anybody reccomend a decent aftermarket head unit? i'm looking for something with a aux input on the front for my mp3 player. as well what sort of adapting brackets will be required?

I'm assuming my stock system is the 6 speaker setup. does that imply that the head unit is a 6 channel system?

i had a look at the speakers tonite and i found the grills for the door tweeters as well as a set of 4x6's in the dash. **edit there is not speakers in the dash **

so is the door setup a seperate mid and tweeter combo? what size are the door tweeters? can a replace the stock head unit with an aftermarket head unit? by this i mean is the factory head unit a 6 channel setup? most aftermarket decks are 4 channel, correct?

i want to gather some info before i get into dismantling and purchasing aftermarket speakers and head units.

1)The tweeters in the doors and the midranges in the doors and spliced together. That means your factory radio is only a 4 channel setup. Remove the speaker housings and you'll see that the tweeter wires are soldered to the 5.25s.
2)The tweeters look like 1 inchers to me, and if you want to go aftermarket with them, most aftermarkets include mounting hardware for different applications. However, I'd keep the stock tweeters, personally, they have huge magnets despite their cone size!
3)I use an Alpine headunit, but I'd recommend a Pioneer or Sony, I've had those two brands and they just sounded better overall to me, and came with more features for way less than what I paid for the Alpine. And before you purchase your headunit, make sure it has at least 2 sets of preouts.

If you want to utilize all of your speakers (this means adding dash speakers in addition to your door speakers) pick up a 4 channel amp, and run your rear
6x9s and front 5.25s with it. Then use your radio to power the tweeters and dash speakers (we'd be talking seriously loud at this point ) Use your other preout for another amp to push subs if you want to complete the package.

anyhoo.

going to go with a deck that has an aux input on the front and high powered 200 watts.

may do component setup for door or replace 5.25 mid with 3 way setup and leave the tweets.

have an amp and 6x9's so may invest in the 4x6 suggestion as well. been a while since i had some bass. a sub would be nice.
