Exclamation Reverse Transmission Issue

New to jeeps here! I recently purchased a 94 Jeep Cherokee that seemed to be in great order. I drove it for 4 days and now it seems to not want to go in reverse, and on top of that it when it started this, it would not turn over in park but will in Neutral. When I unhook the battery it will allow me to start the truck in Park, but then goes back to only starting in Neutral. The engine seems to engage into reverse, but seems to not have alot of power to move the vehicle. All other gears shift fine, its just the reverse. Any ideas on the starting and reverse issues? Are they connected somehow? Please help!! Btw...my driveway sits on a steep hill so the jeep only started this after it was parked on my driveway.

Re: Reverse Transmission Issue

Do you backup lights come on when in reverse?

I'd check the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS). If you search the forum or even google it, you'll find lot's of hits.

Re: Reverse Transmission Issue

No, just checked and they do not come on. Is this expensive to replace or can I can to my local autozone (or whatever) and buy the switch. Also, it is easy to replace or would mechanic have to do it. I also checked the fluid while it was running and it was low. I am definitely adding additional fluid today. Thanks for the information!! I appreciate it!

Re: Reverse Transmission Issue

Many (inclding me) have removed the NSS, took it apart and cleaned it up.

You can review the following to see if you feel like tackling it.
http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm
http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1i/bl713i.htm
http://www.dirtdevils.org/XJNutralSwitch.htm

There are many more sites with this info. Note that a new NSS will cost in excess of $100 and you generally can't find it at a local autoparts store. You can find used ones on eBay for about half that, even less at a local junk yard. Getting the switch off can be troublesome if the shaft is all gooked up. If you're not careful, you can crack the case.

Re: Reverse Transmission Issue

FyI...new NSSs are about $260 new at parts stores. Don't know about dealer...depends on what kind of discount you can get.

I just rebuilt mine. Cost nothing but time and labor.
