85 tercel carb swap ??

getting an 85 tercel, 5 speed in running shape for my 16 year old son to start driving,..200k on it, smokes a little,..but the problem seems to be the carb is running rich. i shot carb cleaner through the throat, and that helped some..but i've heard of a carb swap that replaces the original with a much simpler carb. the stock one looks like it has a lot of plumbing going to it..anything out there that is a simple bolt on from another model ? or..how difficult is this on to rebuild...or is there another option i'm not thinking of ? i'm an old honda motorcycle tech ..and my oldest son is a diesel tech..so between us we can pretty much do what we want to..thanks..pj, in tn.

Re: 85 tercel carb swap ??

I had replaced my carb on a 1990 tercel and it wasnt too bad. It seemed like there was more to it then there really was. I had bought a new carb for about $400. You just need to keep track of the hoses. I hope this was of some help.
