F1 SCHUMI HELMET Question for the experts!! Please help me!

Hi to everybody.

First of all, I have to thank all the people that have helped me and give me some advice and support on my past projects. It was very helpfull all your advices and images.
Now I´m asking again for some help, as some of you recall, I made a 1/4 scale ferrari from scratch,

My 1/4 scale Ferrari F1-2000

now I´m making a replica helmet for my collection, I made lot of tests about making the helmet and the painting and I think it got pretty close to the real thing, but now I want to give more realism.

At the top of the page you can see different F1 helmets with IRIDIUM visors, they look like red/pink/orange in metallic colors; my helmet doesn´t look that stuning because the visor I made from acrylic is made from transparent acrylic.

My 2006 schuberth replica helmet

I want to give this visor the same "look" as the iridium visors, I really don´t care if the visor needs to be painted on top, or that I can´t see throught it, I´m not going to use it in any way, I just want to display it in my collection of F1 stuff, and try to give the same look as the original one.

I forgot to tell, that I´ve tried to find something similar in tinting films, like the ones used in cars, but I couldn´t find any similar color. I think the best way to do something like this is to airbrush it, but again I don´t know how. I do airbrush, but solid colors over helmets or models, but I don´t know how to give this appearance to the visor.
Do you have any suggestions? any airbrushing techniques? special paints?
Please give me some advice.

Thanks in advance.

Window tinting film as would be used on real cars, you can get that in Iridium finish.

mmm, I´ve already looked for it, but I´m in mexico, and here I can only get blue, silver mirrror, gold mirror, black, gray, but not that same color.
do you know any internet supplier that sells the same color? and sends it internationally?
because I´ve looked over the internet, ebay, specialized stores and nobody has this same tint film color. the people that sell tinting film tells me that I won´t get any film in the same color/tones, that´s why I was thinking to airbrush it.
got another idea?

thanks anyway.

Have you thought about Alclad? It should work because it can also be used on Lexan, so spraying on clear acetate should be possible.

The prismatic colors would be close to what you want.

Good luck

Hi, have you tried to get hold of a visor for a motorcycle helmet? are there any motorcycle dealers where you live? maybe they have some scratched ones that they are going to throw away, just cut them to size, hopefully that should do the trick.

Shaun.

Thanks Graham,
you gave me good directions, I´ve never used alclad paints for my scratch models, but went to a local hobby shop to ask for them, and there they showed me this tamiya paint ($12USD)
have any of you used it or seen it? (PS-47 Pink/Gold - 100ml Spray Can)
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=86047

this guy also told me about a translucent red paint:

those are for the polycarbonate R/C models, but I´m not sure.

Any comments?
thanks

Tamiya's Yamaha YZF-R1 Taira Racing kit (14074) has the rainbow effect film for the wind shield. It is 1/12th scale, but may look OK on a scaled helmet. Because it is clear, you can apply some Tamiya Clear Red spray over it (TS74).

Tough call, Ever!

I'm a bit more inclined towards Alclad, because from experience it always gives a good result. With this application you are "pushing the envelope" a bit.

I'm inclined to think that the Tamiya product may be a bit "heavy" for a visor. Alclad tends to be used at very low pressure (airbrush only) and very lightly, so misting onto the visor (from the back?) until you're happy sounds like the right approach. The Tamiya would have to be decanted (else it's going to be like hitting the visor with a fire extinguisher), and I have no idea what the paint thickness (opacity) will be like.

Good luck

Just spraying clear (red) over the visor? will give me that rainbow look?
thanks

the problem is all alclad paints have green tones or blue tones, I need pink, red, gold colors to match the original visor, I was thinking airbrushing clear red over the visor (on the inside), and over that red clear coat apply a light coat of tamiya PS-47 that gives pink-gold tones on the inside too, as a base coat, but you know in the inverse way, since I´m painting it from the inside, what do you think?

I´ve a question:
I´ve seen a similar effect on scale models, in the exhaust pipes, like in motorcycles, F1 cars, like when the metal becomes very heat, and then keeps a rainbow shade, similar when you mix water and oil.
how is that done? I think that could help, but need to know how, to try out in a piece of acrylic. here is a picture of what I mean, I want to give only the pink, violet, gold tones.

thanks

Hi Jelp,

The Tamiya Taira decal has the rainbow colours already but without the overall red tint so overspaying the decal with clear red may get the results you're after as suggested. I was going to suggest this decal too but it I think it will be too small for a 1/4 scale visor. A nice letter to Tamiya may get you some results?

I'd go for the bike shop 1/1 visor route, myself.

I'll contact you next week about my scratchbuild - off on my vacation now!

Re: F1 SCHUMI HELMET Question for the experts!! Please help me!

I would suggest that the Tamiya Clear Red be carefully misted on and build up the layers until you achieve the finish you want.

The scale of the film is around 1/12th, whereas the film at a bike shop is 1:1, which may be too large. I suppose the only way to find out is to try. You can order the film from Tamiya via www.hlj.com or you can try contacting the Tamiya importer for your country or just simply contacting Tamiya.

Good luck

Re: F1 SCHUMI HELMET Question for the experts!! Please help me!

Hi

There are films with the effect you want. 3M makes stuff like that i was told. I have a piece from acolleague of mine from a french company that calls it "Film dichroique GC.Funny Blue.PS" but that could be difficult to acquire. Asking 3M might help.
The trip to the bike shop sounds like the best solution for you. After all the product they sell might be supplied from someone like 3M.
I very much doubt that overspraying a film with Tamiya clear red will give a satisfactory result.
Btw if you want to be very accurate don't forget the rip-off plastic films in front of the visor that the drivers use against dirt. They are just clear with now colour effects :-)

I was looking for this same effect and what I came up with was CD's. Since CD's are so cheap these days, you can peel the backing off a new CD and throw away the plastic and you have your visor effect. Only problem for you is....is a CD big enough to cover your visor in one piece. It's also a lot easier to get enough material off of a CD for a 1/20 or 24 scale visor.
