99 Grand Cherokee Transmission Probs

I have noticed a developing problem over the last year with my vehicle. My 99 Jeepp GC has started a transmission slip problem. First gear is fine, but shifting up into second causes and engine rev, then a jerk as it shifts. It happens very often after a slow down, then an acceleration to follow. I live in the city so this poses a problem. When I had it inspected a month or two ago, then mechanic mentioned "Stop Slip." Has anyone heard whether it is worth trying or not? I appreciate any help you could give.

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee Transmission Probs

How many miles and what motor are on / in your GC? Also, do you have the tow package w/ the Trans cooler? And finally, do you have standard size tires?

Most importantly, have you had the trans flushed recently? If you've had it flushed w/ high miles you may have some floaters in there that are occaisonally getting into the front pump, causing a drop in pressure and the slip you're feeling - if too much crap builds up (and pressure stays low) you'll burn up the clutches quickly.

If the problem is intermittent I would drop the pan, and probably the valve body (or have it done) and clean it out thouroughly. However, if you have more than say 130 or 140K miles it's probably time for a complete rebuild anyway.

Make sure the fluid level is topped off and for me, somtimes adding a few ounces extra helps my tranny out, but don't overdo it, or it will foam and make things worse.

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee Transmission Probs

I have a 2000 GC that does a similar thing. I just got a recall done on it to have the intake manifold debris shield replaced. It is under the trasmission control cable, and they, I am assuming had to take it off to put on the shield. When we got it back it shifted fine in 1st and 2nd gear and then, I, let off the gas because it just revs I lose forward motion so it doesn't clunk. It does not happen when I am slowing down. The thing is, is that if I accelarate quickly it doesn't happen. If I am slow like around turns it happens. I am wondering if it is the cable or the tranny. None of this EVER happened before the recall repair.
It has 92,000 mls. No tow package with cooler. We don't haul anything big and we do have standard tires. I have had it for 2 years and I have not given it a flush.
