Horn doesn't work

Sorry, I tried to do a search and got topics for every car on the road, lol.

Anyways, got a 99' GCL, horn doesn't work....but I can't find anything in the glove compartment manual nor on the plastic fuse holder, if there's a fuse for the horn??

Anyone know? Or if it's not a bad fuse, what might be some other causes?

EDIT: Is there a relay switch and if so whereabouts is it located?

Okay, I remembered there's another "fuse box" near the battery, so I went to Auto Zone, we swapped out the horn relay with a new one, same problem.

Then, we swapped out the fuse with some new fuses, same problem.

So the problem is the horn switch inside the center steering wheel, any advice on fixing the switch and tearing the steering wheel out?

If at the same time I open the steering wheel housing, can I repair the air bag clock spring?

Re: Horn doesn't work

Did you try putting 12v directly to the horn?
If you pull the horn/airbag cover off you'll have access to the clock spring.
Don't forget to DISCONECT The BATTERY BEFORE STARTING ANY WORK AROUND THE AIRBAG!

The clockspring has been on a recall for many chrysler vehicles. Is your airbag light on also? It is not a serviceable part, just replaceable.

Hmmm. here's an interesting find on a recall, tho' it's for the Dodge Caravan, but noticed that over the weekend, I found out that my cruise control didn't work either, besides the horn and the "usual" airbag light is constantly on.

The clockspring is the main hub for all the above wiring that runs thru it.

So I called Jeep this morning (800-853-1403) and inquire if there are any recalls on the 99 GCL, she says "no, not at this time, but there is a possible activation of a recall", and that she is taking down all the information needed, in the case they do "launch the recall", even with 181K miles on my Jeep. If I need to get it repaired quicker, to keep all my receipts for possible reimbursement.

Maybe some of you owners with the similar issues might want to call Jeep and log in your vehicle with them....you'll need the last 8 digits of your VIN when calling in.

Re: Horn doesn't work

Did you ever resolve this issue?

Right now my airbag light is on and the horn isn't working. This happened a while back and the cause was CHEWED WIRES!! Apparently squirrels or groundhogs chewed the wires for the airbag sensor and I guess that's somehow connected to the horn. Dunno.

When it happened the first time I took it to a dealership and to diagnose and repair it was $150. I seriously don't have the $$$ to fix this again. Anyone know where I should even START to look for these wires? Is this in any way a DIY project?

Hi, yes, I did get it resolved.....I got the OEM part from the dealer ($148), found an indie garage guy, and replaced in an hour's time. I didn't have the time to work on itself and worth the extra $40 spent.

Btw, those wires in particular are located inside the horn area, so if you don't have any holes surrounding it, it may be something else going on. Where's the chewed wire location, near the steering wheel or inside the engine bay or ???

The garage guy says the hardest part was removing the steering wheel, which took about 5 minutes extra.
