2003 Cavalier power window problem, help
I have a Chevy Cavalier Sedan LS with power windows. Lately the drivers side window and the rear passenger side windows will go down but then won't go back up. If I wait half hour they will go back up 2-6 inches but then I have to give it another half hour before they will go up another couple inches and so on until I get them completely up. It's real annoying and I'm not sure if they are going to stop working so I've stopped using them. Anyone have any ideas. I don't think its the window motors, they sound fine when they are actually working.

take the door panels off and lube up the slide mechanism on each window. ,sounds like motors are getting hot and just shutting down

Now the windows won't even go down more then half inch, so i don't think that the motors are getting hot, the motor isn't even running for a fraction of a second before shutting off.

Re: 2003 Cavalier power window problem, help
More than likely your window motors are going out. The only way to properly diagnose them is to take the door panel off, find the connector going to the motor, backprobe BOTH wires at the same time with a 12v trest light or similar while the window switch is pushed. What you're doing is making sure that there is both power and ground at the motor (just checking for power isn't enough). If there is power and ground at the motor when you push the switch up and down, then you have a bad motor. If not, let us know what you found and you can go from there.
BTW, both of my back windows have the same problem and I'm too cheap to fix 'em (I did fix the fronts). So I just took the cover off of the window switches for the rear ones so no one would accidentally let them down. |

Re: 2003 Cavalier power window problem, help
...it ended up being the window motors, thank you...
btw, i talked to the chevy dealer to get 2 window motors and got quoted $189 a piece...brand new motors through NAPA, $38...talk about a markup on original GM products |

Re: 2003 Cavalier power window problem, help
To be honest, the OEM motors are probably better quality and fit. But for that much of a price difference, who cares.

Re: 2003 Cavalier power window problem, help
I have an 02 Cavalier, same model though. My rear driver's side window does something similar, except that when it wont go up, if you hold the button down for alittle bit, you can actually physically pull the window up. It's the only way I've been able to get the window up. It goes down just fine, but wont go up unless you pull/push it up.
Thnx in advanced for the help |

Re: 2003 Cavalier power window problem, help
had problem with motor in passanger side window in 99 cavalier z24. motor went up slowly then stopped, had to wait several minutes to go again. i'd just replace the motor, seems like the cavalier motor or setup breaks down over the years pretty easily. it is a pain in the ass though cause the space is so tight. and because GM rivets everything in which is almost impossible to get off without the right tools. if you are going to do this make sure you get a rivet remover or a drill that actually has bits that are made for going through metal, or else it is going to take 20 minutes per rivet to get off and there are like 7 rivets. its definitely a do it yourself and help would be nice for an extra set of hands, but just be prepared for a lot of tedious work and get the right tools.

Re: 2003 Cavalier power window problem, help
Here's one for ya'll to check out...same car as last time, but this time it's the driver's side window. It has issues going down, it'll go a few inches, then if i let the engine run a bit, it'll go down some more. When i put it back up, i have no problem what-so-ever, goes up like it's a brand new motor
any ideas? |
