89 GMC power steering pump removal

Is it necessary to remove the pulley from the power steering pump to access the bolts to the pump?

I can't seem to loosen the allen bolt that holds the pulley to the pump and the bolts behind the pulley can't be accessed without the pulley off.

Thank you.

Yes and you need a special tool to remove/install the power steering pump pulley. This tool can usually be rented at most auto parts stores.

Re: 89 GMC power steering pump removal

I rented the tool from Auto Zone. Pulley was easy to get off with the right tool.

One thing interesting is that Auto Zone sells the pump with the resevoir attached, another parts store only sold the pump and I would have to use the old resevoir.

Price was about the same at both places.

New pump came with a bolt, washer and nut that can be used to press the pulley back onto the pump.

Do not use the nut that came with the bolt,It is square headed and get another nut.Put a small amount of grease inside the bore in the pulley where it gets pressed into shaft. It goes on much easier and I do it this way.

Re: 89 GMC power steering pump removal

I used the square nut and got the pulley on most of the way.

I did put grease inside too and that helped.

Haven't been able to get the pulley on the shaft all the way, it's about 1/4" back from where it should be. This is causing the belt to want to ride on the edge of the pulley.

Anyone have an idea as to why the pulley won't seat down the remaining 1/4"?

I'm going to try a hex nut as suggested and will have to make sure that the bolt is all the way into the shaft. Other than that I don't see why the pulley wouldn't seat all the way down.
