96 Bonneville won't start

Hi all,

I have a 96 Bonneville SE with 206,000 miles. Yesterday, I took it out and all of a sudden it started to run real bad. It had a bad miss. Once it quite but restarted. by time I got it home (about 5 minutes) the miss was better. By time I got home, the temperature gage was high. The check engine light came on and was flashing. I never saw the flashing before. I checked the codes and it said it had three codes saying it had multiple misfires. I cleared the codes and restarted it. The nit said that I had a misfire on #5. I pulled #5 and it was black and wet but did not smell like gas. I pulled #3 and it looked fine. I cleaned the plugs and reinstalled them. I checked the water and it was down 1.5 gallons. I recently replaced the radiator and it was holding the level pretty well. I just checked it a a thousand miles ago when I added a quart of oil. I don't know where the water went. No steam, no puddles, nothing. It typically loses about .5 gallons every 10,000 miles.

When I tried to restart it today, it almost started and now it just cranks over and will not start. I have 40 psi of fuel pressure but the spark is erratic. Sometime it sparks and sometimes it stops. I tried several different wires to confirm it. Every once in a while I get a little fire in one cylinder, but mostly not.

I also smell gas. I'd suspect the crankshaft position sensor but I thought they always shut down the fuel too, when there is a CPS error? Of course, that would not solve the water problem.

Any ideas?

Ron

Re: 96 Bonneville won't start

Might be the lower intake gasket or upper intake failure. Any signs of coolant in the oil? Here's a link to an article on the problem.
