2002 xtype rear brakes tapping noise

does anyone know why the rear brakes tap when i drive? it has just started. On some occasions i can jigle the rear brake pads so i know its the pads. Is there a shim that fell off holding the brake pads flush? or is there some tensioner system that has failed? please advise if know a remidy for this problem
