93 Grand Prix LE headache
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, but have found lots of useful information so I thought I would join.
I have a bit of a problem. I bought a 93 LE w/ a 3.1 L. The car has 156,000 miles on it. When I purchased it, I put on two new tires, replaced the rear struts, changed the oil and fuel filters. I also changed plugs and wires as well as all fluids. The transmission was flushed and replaced with a new filter. I had it inspected by a tranny shop incase i needed to replace the car before major repair bills came up. It all checked out. I also replaced the 02 sensor about 200 miles ago. The air filter was also replaced, and no diagnostic lights are coming on. I thought it could be the injectors, but i did go through and use a lot of cleaner. The exhaust isn't abnormal. Nothing to think it's rich. The car has only put on 3000 miles since all these repairs. Well this past winter i noticed that below 50 degrees, the car requires an additional 10 mins. to warm up so that tranny can build pressure so i can use reverse. Any time above 60 degrees the car idle's fine and i have reverse immediately. I assume that the pump is headed south. Also, the car seems gutless in 1st. And while driving at speed, it doesn't seem to have any tranny response w/ downshifts. Sometimes when backing up regardless of temp., the car will just die from the load of putting it into drive. But the real problem lies with the fuel mileage. I'm getting 15 mpg in town and 21 on the highway. My f150 is matching that. The whole purpose was to leave my good vehicle in the garage to keep miles off of it while getting a bit better mpg. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this might be? Thanks Last edited by bigksu; 07-26-2007 at 04:44 PM. |

Re: 93 Grand Prix LE headache
Welcome to AF!!
Unfortunately it sounds like your transmission is going out. You are getting slippage in the transmission itself and that is why you lack power and acceleration and the fuel mileage problem. One mistake you made was to have the tranny flushed, that probably sealed the death warrant for this transmission. Before doing anything have the transmission scanned by a trans capable scanner to see if any problems can be identified. But unfortunately I think you are headed for a new tranny and converter. |

Re: 93 Grand Prix LE headache
Thanks, this has been quite helpfull. I guess i'll sell it. It's not worth it to me to fix it. I'll buy a bike or something. It's sad that my '05 f150 is getting better mileage.
Now I have to figure out how to ditch it, lol. Thanks again. |
