Golf Mk3 Intermittent Stopping

My wife’s 1993 Golf will suddenly stop without warning. Can happen in the middle of a roundabout or in a busy traffic route. Typically the car will start to chug along , the rev counter starts to jump about & the ignition light comes on and off. The car will then stop and when that happens it cannot be started straight away although it may restart after a period of about fifteen minutes.
A new coil has been fitted. New ignition leads have been fitted and the plugs have been renewed but the problem remains.
I understand that others have had this problem with VW cars but has anyone found a solution thereto ?
Can anyone help please?

Re: Golf Mk3 Intermittent Stopping

I've had this problem already. At first I thought it had something to do with the fuel injector but found out that wasn't the problem. Get a can of carburator (I know I didn't spell that right) cleaner, remove the air filter and spray around the pipes.

Re: Golf Mk3 Intermittent Stopping

May be worth considering other causes of this problem. When the car falters do all electrical items like lights flicker or go out - could be a problem with battery terminals or the vehicles earthing circuits - just my thoughts after the same sort of problems with a car I used to own.

Please let us know when you get it sorted.
