2000 Sonata - Ignition after gas fill-up

I own an 2000 Sonata - 4 cylinder. About a year ago, I noticed a problem starting the car after a fill up. When I start the car, it is very rough and stalls if I do not press the accelerator to rev the engine. After I get into gear without stalling and drive for some distance and park the car and try to restart the car, it starts without any problem. This problem only occurs the very first time starting the car after a fill-up at the gas station. Some observations, when I open the gas cap to fill up the tank, no pressure sound is heard. Could it be the cap? Any sugguestion is appreciated.

Thanks.

plee3590.

Re: 2000 Sonata - Ignition after gas fill-up

Hi,
There is a TSB on this problem.
I found it by going to the local public Library and using their "ALLDATA" account.

Went to Hyundai with the TSB and they sold the valve to me, my son the auto tech student installed it in 5 minutes - easy to find undr the hood.
Problem went away, 2 years ago.
Give it a try.
Tony

Re: 2000 Sonata - Ignition after gas fill-up

Technical Service Bulletin The factories put these out concerning a specific condition about all cars. It is made available to the dealers, so that they might know how to fix that specific problem..... Sometimes it contains updated repair info for a specific problem.

Re: 2000 Sonata - Ignition after gas fill-up

I looked into the TSB #04-36-006 titled "Engine Controls - Unstable Idle". The TSB states that it is a EGR Solenoid Valve problem. If this is the problem, the unstable idle should not occur only after refueling, it should occur other times as well, intermittently. Could there be a link between my current problem with loss of pressure in the gas tank? On my other car, when I go to refuel and open the cap, you can hear the release of pressure, however, not on my Sonata.

Re: 2000 Sonata - Ignition after gas fill-up

Hi Again,
The TSB is 00-20-003 May 2000 EVAP System - Canister Purge Valve Stuck

If you local public library has an Alldata account. log in to the Hyundai, 2000, 2.4 liter, Sonata area for TSB's and this will be able to be printed out. It will save you the cost of a subscription to Alldata.
If not, just go to a Hyundai dealer and ask the parts guy for the purge valve that is mentioned in this TSB. I am sure that he will know about it. It cost about 50- 60 bucks a couple of years ago.

Once again, after my son installed the purge valve, it stopped the problem. Period.

Good luck.
Tony

Thumbs up Re: 2000 Sonata - Ignition after gas fill-up

I purchased the part on the TSB and replaced it. I filled the tank and tada...the problem was fixed. Thanks very much.

Re: 2000 Sonata - Ignition after gas fill-up

I am very happy it worked out for you.

I suspect there are a lot of 2000 Sonata's being sold because of this problem.

Happy day for sure!
