As far as I've been told and my experience with my Z34, the 3.4L engine in the car has been an absolute nightmare
. I was wondering if there is a new engine that could be installed in the car that would mate up with the trans without significate modification like the new 3.9 or 3.4 out of the impala. I love the car but the engine is starting to tick from the lifters and no mechanic will touch the engine type anymore. It's time for a new engine. |

Re: Replacement Engine for the Z34
Without a same year complete donor car, to include engine, engine wiring harness and ECM, it's not possible to switch to another engine. The 3.4 DOHC is a hard to work on POS. If the engine is having issues, it's time to sell this car and get something more dependable.

Re: Replacement Engine for the Z34
I was asking myself the same question for my son's Z-34...I would probably not want to save it, but was intrigued by the fact that Autozone gives the same wiring diagram for the 91/92 3.1 and the DOHC 3.4 (VIn X). The diagram contains just a few extra wires for the VIn-X that would simply end nowhere with the multiport 3.1....so I was wondering if in fact it could not be swapped....saving at least 100 pounds and a lot of room....
THis is just for talking, because the frame corrosion exhibits same symptoms as described in an adjacent thread...and this , if not the engine, will put an end to that POS. www.avigex.ca/z34/schematic.gif

Re: Replacement Engine for the Z34
id think you shouldnt bother with changing engine as if your frame is rotting at same spot as mine, it be better to get a whole new shell which i dunno where to get it, and at this point its not worth fixing cuz i have to change the crank sensor in the oil pan and i using kids to get at it cuz my hands dont fit in there once i change this sensor hopefully they can take ito ut and put a new one back in i selling both cars maybe drive it a bit till i get another car but selling cuz too much engine work on the 3.4 z34 engine and there is nothing to weld to to fix the rear stablizer strut anymore to the chassi u can put ur finger through it. so i guess gm didnt put in plugs as u putshed finger through and salty sand poured outta frame. I love this car but i guess also time to get a replacement too much work not dependable anymore and i want AC and this doesnt work have the time lol
