1996 'P' Mk3 Golf CL Diesel 5 speed manual gearbox

Hi

I've had this car for over eight years and it's been a great workhorse but I think there is a problem with the gearbox.

Spoke to the local VW dealer who tells me that this car has a DFW gearbox, unique to the car and it's year. I was horrified to be told that a recon exchange unit from VW would cost £1130.86 + VAT - obviously out of the question for my old faithful Golf.

Can anybody with knowledge tell me if any other Golf models/years would have gearboxes that I could use on my car. Any identifying gearbox models would be helpful too - not sure what DFW relates to on my gearbox but guess it is stamped somewhere.

Help much appreciated - last thing I want to do is scrap this car.

Rob

Re: 1996 'P' Mk3 Golf CL Diesel 5 speed manual gearbox

is it the 1.6 or 1.9 diesel?

The 1.9 diesel uses the same gearbox(with higher gearing) that the passat 2.0L and passat 16v. You "could" take one from them but the gearing would be horrible and acelleration would be slow.

Re: 1996 'P' Mk3 Golf CL Diesel 5 speed manual gearbox

Hi

Thanks for the reply - I realise that this is a long shot.

It's the 1.9 without a turbo - 64BHP or thereabouts, registered December 1996 on a 'P' plate.

I would really require the gearbox to be exactly the same ratios as diesel power pretty inflexible without turbo.

Cheers

Rob
